Sukanya Arrest: TMC Declares It Has Zero Tolerance for Corruption But Vendetta Politics Should Not Exist

The TMC, whose leader Anubrata Mondal's daughter was detained by the ED on Wednesday, said that although the party has “zero tolerance” for corruption, the BJP shouldn't engage in any politics of retaliation against its political rivals.

Sukanya, the daughter of the TMC leader, was detained by the Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday in Delhi on suspicion of money laundering in connection with an alleged cattle smuggling case.

TMC state spokesman Kunal Ghosh responded to Sukanya's detention by telling a TV station that the party would not support any offender because it has “zero tolerance” for corruption. But we question if Sukanya couldn't be questioned first outside the prison. He expressed his concern that the arrest would be yet another example of the BJP's vengeance politics and expressed his hope that the central agency's investigations will be impartial and fair.

The TMC state general secretary, Ghosh, questioned why no action had been taken against BJP officials whose names appeared in financial problems and who had not been “even once” questioned by the investigation authorities.

“Despite being identified in the Saradha and Narada scandals, why hasn't BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari been subject to any punishment? Although his name was discovered on a duplicate of a property title that was in the hands of an accused in the teachers' recruitment scam, why has BJP leader Dilip Ghosh not even been once questioned? The CBI and ED should conduct their investigation impartially, he said.

Sukanta Majumdar, the state president of the BJP, said that the ED investigation revealed Sukanya had accumulated enormous wealth in a short period of time that was out of proportion to her known sources of income.

“She is young and has just recently worked as a primary school teacher. However, she has millions in her account. Where did she obtain all that cash? He queried.

Majumdar said that she was not assisting the investigators as claimed in the papers. “The money trail will be known now that the ED has taken her into custody,” he said.

The ED had already questioned Sukanya many times as well.

The CBI detained Anubrata Mondal, the TMC district president for Birbhum, in August of last year for his suspected participation in cattle smuggling. He was also included in the agency's charge sheet. The ED, which also looks into the money trail, arrested him.
