Usage-Based & On-Demand Insurance Models Flexibility in a Digital-First Economy

Usage-based and on-demand insurance models are gaining traction in India as consumer expectations shift toward flexibility, transparency, and pay-as-you-use services. These models move away from traditional annual, fixed-premium structures and instead align coverage duration and pricing with actual usage patterns.

In motor insurance, telematics-enabled usage-based insurance (UBI) allows insurers to price policies based on driving behavior, distance traveled, and risk patterns. With the rapid adoption of connected vehicles and smartphone-based tracking solutions, insurers are increasingly piloting “pay-as-you-drive” and “pay-how-you-drive” models. These products appeal particularly to urban consumers who use vehicles intermittently or work remotely.

On-demand insurance extends this concept further by enabling short-duration coverage. Travel insurance activated for a few days, gadget insurance for specific events, or marine cargo insurance for a single shipment are examples of flexible models. Digital platforms and API-based integrations are making such offerings more operationally feasible.

The growth of India’s gig economy, shared mobility platforms, and freelance workforce further strengthens demand for episodic coverage. Delivery partners, ride-hailing drivers, and short-term contractors often require protection that matches their income cycles and risk exposure periods.

However, adoption faces structural challenges. Regulatory clarity on telematics data usage, privacy safeguards, and standardization remains critical. Pricing accuracy depends heavily on data quality, and India’s varied infrastructure and driving conditions complicate risk modeling.

Despite these challenges, usage-based and on-demand models represent a broader shift toward customer-centric insurance design. As digital infrastructure matures and regulatory frameworks evolve, flexible insurance products are expected to become an integral component of India’s distribution ecosystem.
