Following a brain bleed earlier this month, Edwin van der Sar said on Tuesday that he is no longer in critical care but is still in the hospital.

While on vacation in Croatia, Van der Sar was originally checked into a hospital in Split.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-84533″ src=”” alt=”” width=”1357″ height=”760″ srcset=” 300w,×84.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1357px) 100vw, 1357px” />

Van der Sar said on Twitter, “First of all, we want to thank everyone for all the amazing and encouraging words.

I’m delighted to report that I’ve left the critical care unit. But I’m still in the hospital. I’m hoping to return home the following week and go on with my rehab.

Van der Sar, who worked at Old Trafford for six years until departing in 2011, most recently served as a director at Ajax. However, he left the position at the conclusion of the last campaign after the team finished third in the Dutch league and lost out on Champions League play for the first time since 2009.

After “an incredibly tough period” of more than ten years at the leadership of the Amsterdam powerhouse, Van der Sar announced in May that he was stepping down as Ajax CEO.

Van der Sar, who is regarded as one of the all-time greatest goalkeepers, played for Ajax from 1990 to 1999 and won the Champions League in 1995.

After stints with Juventus and Fulham, he went on to win the European Cup once again with Manchester United in 2008.

In 2012, Van der Sar returned to Ajax as director of marketing. Four years later, he was elevated to CEO.

While he was a player for the Old Trafford-based team in 2009, Edwin van der Sar’s wife Annemarie van Kesteren had a brain hemorrhage, but she finally made a complete recovery.
