Tejaswin Shankar, a decathlete at the Asian level, desires to compete in the high jump event in the Olympics and World Championships

Tejaswin Shankar earned a bronze medal in the decathlon on Thursday at the Asian Athletics Championships, but he plans to continue competing in high jump since it is his “bread and butter event” at the Olympics and World Championships.

Tejaswin, who is now ranked 31st in the world (out of 36 competitors), is still in the running for the Budapest World Championships in August.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-75722″ src=”×417.jpg” alt=”” width=”1577″ height=”877″ srcset=”×417.jpg 750w,×569.jpg 1024w,×427.jpg 768w,×83.jpg 150w, 1200w” sizes=”(max-width: 1577px) 100vw, 1577px” />

Athletes may join the championship event in addition to those who automatically qualify by earning a qualifying mark by accruing world ranking points.

“I frequently cleared 2.26 meters in the high jump, but I was unable to clear 2.30 meters. I wanted to try something different, so I chose the decathlon,” Tejaswin stated during a virtual media event after taking home the bronze medal in the event with 7527 total points.

“I hope to continue competing in the decathlon at the Asian level (Asian Championships and Asian Games). But my main event is still the high jump. I hope to qualify for the (individual) high jump event in the Olympics the next year,” the Delhi athlete said.

The 24-year-old stated he would want to talk with the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) about how to proceed with his prospects for the World Championships after taking home a bronze in the high jump at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

“I want to compete in high jump at the World Championships too. In the global Athletics-prepared Road to Budapest global standings, I am presently 32nd (31st). I wish to consult the AFI for guidance on this matter.

He chose the shot put, pole vault, discus throw, and javelin as the events he has to become better at if he wants to regularly rack up high total scores. The other competitions are the 100-meter dash, long jump, high jump, 400-meter dash, 110-meter hurdles, and 1500-meter dash.

“I’ve only been competing in the decathlon for a year, but I’ll learn as I gain experience. I’d want to pole vault for 4.10 or 4.20 meters. In the javelin, I became better here.

In actuality, Tajaswin was competing in his fourth decathlon tournament overall. He exceeded the 7500-point threshold to qualify for the Asian Games after taking first place with 7576 points in the National Inter-State Championships last month.

The selection committee will meet on Friday to choose the Indian athletics squad for the Hangzhou Asian Games, according to AFI President Adille Sumariwalla.

According to the Olympic Council of Asia’s regulation, all nations must submit their athletes’ entries by July 15 in order to participate.

“I continue to believe that it is absurd for the Asian Games organizers to require its participating nations to submit their submissions by July 15 two months in advance. I had brought up this issue in the Asian Athletics Association Congress as well.

The meeting of the selecting committee will take place tomorrow. We’ll keep an eye on how well our athletes are doing. The gold medalists here will enter the World Championships directly.

Area champions are eligible to compete in the championship event under the global Athletics-developed qualifying standards provided there is no higher entry (by global rankings) of another athlete from the same region in the same event.

While most events’ qualifying periods for the 2024 Olympics began on July 1, the 2023 World Championships period concludes on July 30.
